Empowering a near-sustainable community in Zambia
Nakawa Community Village
Meet Cynthia & Silumba - an extraordinary couple living in the remote village of Nakawa, approximately 70kms from Livingstone. Recognising the need to educate children in the remote areas surrounding their community, Cynthia, Silumba and their dedicated team set up the Nakawa Community Academy providing meals and education for 120 children - and growing!
A formal education in Africa gives children and young adults the opportunity to develop skills that will allow them to earn a living and support themselves, their families and their communities in the future. Nakawa Community Academy is a preschool for children aged 3 to 5 years old.
How to Get Involved!
Visit Nakawa Community Academy as a guest of Chundukwa River Lodge. We invite our guests to visit this lovely community themselves to meet Cynthia and Silumba. When you visit Nakawa with us, we donate USD $20.00 per visitor directly to the School Fund.

We are thrilled to announce the incredible success of our recent campaign to Buy a School Bus for the children of Nakawa Community Academy. After witnessing 67 children from surrounding villages squeezed into a single vehicle on their way to school, we knew we had to take action.
Nakawa Community Academy: A New School Bus for the Children!
With the help of an amazing supporter, Marcus Scales in the UK, we launched a GoFundMe campaign that touched the hearts of thousands of people across the globe. We are beyond excited to share that one extraordinary donor has now committed to contributing the remaining funds needed to purchase the school bus!
This generous gift will ensure safer, more comfortable transport for the children, allowing them to focus on what really matters—learning and growing at Nakawa Community Academy. To all who supported this campaign, whether by donating or spreading the word, we want to say a heartfelt THANK YOU.
Your kindness and support will have a lasting impact on the lives of these children.
Because everybody deserves an education.

As a sustainable food initiative, the couple have created a large vegetable garden, a tree nursery and a fruit orchard to feed the 120 school children and 16 members of staff. The children receive two meals a day at school (breakfast and lunch). The Chundukwa Foundation is raising funds to subsidise the community feeding efforts with the additional protein, carbohydrates and good fats required.
It only costs USD 8.00 per month to sponsor two meals per day for one Nakawa student.
Fundraising Goal - USD 1,088.00 per month

Access to year-round water is more important than ever as Cynthia feeds all 120 children in her pre-primary school daily. We are currently raising funds for a solar panel that can power a water pump, as well as fund a second borehole - this will provide enough water to irrigate the Nakawa Feeding Initiative of vegetable gardens, fruit orchard and the tree nursery, as well as providing safe, clean drinking water for the community and livestock.
Fundraising Goal - approx USD 8,600.00
Second borehole - siting and drilling
Solar Equipment
Replacement of the hand pump, system cylinder and rods
Upgrade irrigation system in the field and fruit orchard

Nakawa Community Academy seek financial aid to support continued education programs and salaries for the 16 members of staff working at the school.
Cynthia encourages self-empowerment and has recently begun a sponsorship fund for the further education and qualification of motivated individuals. There are three volunteers at Nakawa Community Academy that are enrolled to study Teacher Training at Mosi-Oa-Tunya College of Education.
Fundraising Goal - USD 2,050.00 per month

With access to WiFi, Nakawa staff will have access to online teaching materials. STARLINK is an available option in remote areas of Zambia and we are fundraising for the one-off installation fee and monthly fee thereafter.
Fundraising Goal - USD 1,000.00 for the installation, thereafter USD 40,00 per month

Many of the children at Nakawa do not have access to running water in the remote villages that they live in. An on-site shower facility with clean water will help to bring a sanitary washing solution for these children and the staff members that look after them. Let’s make this happen today!
Fundraising Goal - approx USD 1,200.00

A clean kitchen is an absolute MUST at a school where high standards of food hygiene is so important for the health and welfare of hundreds of children. Nakawa is feeding 120 children daily. Let's give them a clean kitchen to store food and cook - and a dedicated dining area to eat.

As we continue our mission to provide the best learning environment for the students, we are reaching out to generous supporters like you for help with a critical need: purchasing essential stationery supplies.
Basic items such as notebooks, pens, pencils, and paper play a key role in students' learning success. We are able to purchase these goods in Livingstone.
Fundraising Goal - USD 500.00 per year
We encourage visitors to donate goods to the preschool such as age-appropriate books and other materials for learning and fun. The Wish List also includes sporting items such as soccer balls, a favourite pastime at Nakawa!
We are proud members of Pack for a Purpose, an initiative that allows travelers like you to make a lasting impact in the community at your travel destination. If you save just a few kilos of space in your suitcase and take supplies for the projects we support in need, you’ll make a priceless impact in the lives of our local children and families. Teddy Bear Donation Drive
Help Bring Smiles!
The children at Nakawa Community Academy come from remote and underserved villages. Many are orphans living with extended family or caretakers who struggle to provide even basic necessities. For most of these children, owning a toy of their very own is a distant dream.
We’re calling on all Friends of Nakawa to make a difference! We are seeking donations of teddy bears and soft toys for the children. Whether it’s a gently loved bear, a handmade stuffed friend, or a brand-new toy, your gift will bring immense joy to these children.
Our goal is to collect 120 teddy bears, and the countdown has begun!
You can send a teddy bear on a heartwarming adventure by post through DHL or other carriers. Contact us today for more information on how to donate and make a child's day brighter. Together, we can fill their hearts with love and their arms with teddy bears!

Let’s make this vision a reality!
Fundraising Goal - approx USD 8,200.00
