Hippo Feeding Initiative
We have hungry, hungry hippos.
We are facing an unprecedented drought after the lack of rains in the 2023/2024 Rainy Season. Hippos suffer on the same scale as any other large herbivore during drought periods. Their size necessitates a minimum consumption per 24-hour period of 45kg of grass per adult animal, which will also drink up to 200 litres of water in the same period. Once summer arrives, a new challenge will be faced as the wildlife are suffering not just from lack of food but a lack of energy. Hippos have very little chance to survive under these conditions.
The Chundukwa Foundation are raising funds to subsidise the lack of fresh, green grass with a high protein offering of hippo feed in and around our property every evening.
